Treatment of depression

Depression has a variety of causes and also differs symptomatically from one another. Effective treatment therefore requires a thorough diagnosis and differential therapy planning. Sanatorium Kilchberg combines various elements in the treatment of depression. We draw up an individual treatment plan for each person affected, taking into account the specific symptoms and stress factors.

A cornerstone of our depression treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy, the long-term effectiveness of which has been scientifically proven. It is based on individual discussions, supplemented by group therapies.

The biological therapy elements include

  • Carefully coordinated drug treatment with few side effects
  • Light therapy and wakefulness therapy
  • Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS)
  • Intravenous and intranasal ketamine treatment
  • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)

Repetitive transkranielle Magnetstimulation (rTMS)
Intranasale und intravenöse Ketaminbehandlung
Elektrokonvulsionstherapie (EKT)

"Depression is a very heterogeneous disorder. Therefore, differentiated and individualized therapies are needed to treat them successfully."

Prof. Dr. med. Katja Cattapan

Inpatient

Inpatient treatment for depression is indicated if outpatient therapy does not achieve the desired goal or if the person concerned requires special support in everyday life. Inpatient treatment may also be advisable for psychological crises, particularly those involving suicidal tendencies.

In addition to treatment with biological and psychotherapeutic methods, relief in everyday life, resource-oriented activation and support in crises are important therapeutic components of inpatient treatment. These can be supplemented by complementary methods (e.g. aromatherapy, massages, ear acupuncture). The antidepressant and stress-regulating effect of exercise is used in movement and physiotherapy. Creative therapies and music therapy strengthen creative and emotional resources.

  • For chronic depression (defined as lasting at least two years), schema therapy in individual and group settings has proven to be more effective than conventional methods. For severe forms of depression, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is available after prior in-depth assessment.

For patients who have attempted suicide, we offer ASSIP (Attempted Suicide Short Intervention Program) as a highly effective short intervention.

We treat generally insured patients with depression on wards B2 and A3. The integrated psychiatric-psychotherapeutic services on ward B2 focus in particular on biological methods (especially light and wakefulness therapy) and are also suitable for crisis interventions. On ward A3, we offer several weeks of inpatient psychotherapy (including schema therapy) in individual and group settings.

Private wards E and F, which specialize in the treatment of depression and psychosomatic disorder, are available for patients with additional insurance. The range of therapies includes

  • Differentiated diagnostics
  • Management of medical treatment by the head physician and the deputy head physician
  • Intensive individual psychotherapy 2-3 times a week (incl. schema therapy)
  • Biological therapy methods
  • A selection of group programs in the following areas
    • Depression
    • Training in emotional competence
    • Mindfulness
    • Communication
  • Specialist therapeutic basic program in a group setting with physiotherapy and physical therapy, Yoga, Nordic Walking, progressive relaxation, Qigong, strength weight training, running group, occupational therapy, art therapy or music therapy
  • Complementary offers (aromatherapy, NADA ear acupuncture)

In addition to the basic specialist therapy program, further therapy elements can be planned individually in a one-to-one setting

  • Physiotherapy and movement therapy in an individual setting
  • Creative therapy and music therapy in an individual setting
  • Medical massage
  • Biofeedback procedures

Treatment on these quiet wards combines a high level of specialist knowledge and many years of experience with a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere, which is conducive to recovery.

The private wards offer comfortably furnished single rooms with bath and shower, TV, WLAN, safe and minibar and a beautifully landscaped garden within the ward. The individually designed gastronomic offer combines pleasure and nutritional principles in a balanced way. This includes à la carte menus and snacks with a wide selection of non-alcoholic drinks.

The private wards are available to patients with private and semi-private insurance, as well as to patients with general insurance who pay an additional daily flat rate.

The Seeblick and Belvedere wards are available for the treatment of fatigue depression / burnout.
